Evoking José Esteban Muñoz’s opening line of Cruising Utopia, “Queerness is not yet here,” Jas Lin invites Fire Island to orient toward the horizon beyond the island’s surfaces, enclosures, flags, and boardwalks. Lin utilizes the treadmill to chase the ecstasy of a runner’s high– stepping out of straight, linear time to draw new desire lines that lead us beyond the confines of the beaten path. In an increasingly surveilled world that even surveils the way we walk, this performance serves as a practice ground for rehearsing possibility while evading legibility. If ekstasis– the Greek root of ecstasy– means to stand outside of oneself, it also gestures toward stepping into the infinite potential of becoming. Dancing on the shoreline, how can we embody the horizon, one step after the other?
