an embodied ritual for moving and transforming this capsule of feeling for melanie. with mel, it is a process of chiseling– of witnessing the magic in her purest most honest expression, and helping to shape her movements into choreography that can be repeated for a video shoot while trying to preserve their irreplicable essence. throughout this intimate and spacious process, i witnessed melanie release the expectation of performance (moving from the outside in), and connect with the ritual of alchemy and transmutation (moving from the inside out)– the embodied practice of shutting down the internal judgmental eye, the surveillance camera; the exorcism of internal demons and painful self criticism; and alchemizing that darkness into beauty.
